Dr. Timothy Lai is currently Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, The Chinese University of Hong Kong; and Director of the 2010 Retina and Macula Centre, Hong Kong. His clinical and research interests lie in the medical and surgical management of retinal diseases, particularly polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, choroidal neovascularization, central serous chorioretinopathy, myopic maculopathy, visual electrophysiology; and genetics of retinal diseases and uveitis.
As one of the leading researchers in retinal and macular diseases in the world, Dr. Lai has served as a Principle Investigator in more than 15 multi-centered clinical trials for the treatment of retinal diseases and uveitis. Dr. Lai has published over 230 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and has a Scopus h-index of 46. He has co-authored and edited more than 10 textbooks and book chapters. His academic achievements are well-recognized internationally and has received many awards including the Nakajima Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (2008), Awardee of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of Hong Kong (2008), Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2010), Achievement Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (2011), Victor Yong Lecture of the NHG Eye Institute in Singapore (2013), Senior Achievement Award of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2017), Constable Lecture Award of the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society (2017), and Senior Achievement Award of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (2019).
Dr. Lai serves on the editorial boards of various major international ophthalmic journals including Assistant Editor of Retina, Associate Editor of Eye, Section Editor of Asia-Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology; and Board Member of Ophthalmologica, EyeNet and BioMed Research International. He was a former Editor-in-Chief of the Hong Kong Journal of Ophthalmology. His other major leadership roles include Deputy Secretary-General of the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-Retina Society, Section Chair of the International Ocular Inflammation Society, and Scientific Program Committee Member of major ophthalmology meetings including Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology congresses and World Ophthalmology Congresses. He has been elected as a member of The Macula Society, The Retina Society and The American Ophthalmologic Society.
